To celebrate National Children's Book Day, a special children's book fair featuring the country's major children's book publishers shall be held from 9 till 2:30 pm at the Museo Pambata. The fair shall be open to the public and admission is free.

There shall also be a special workshop for librarians called, The School Library as Avenue for the Development of Life Skills (An Echo and Workshop Session of the 42nd IASL Conference in Indonesia) from 9-12 noon also in Museo Pambata. The workshop shall be facilitated by Zarah Gagatiga, Librarian, Beacon Academy and PBBY Board Member.

This workshop session will help librarians integrate life skills and well-being indicators in library management. Ms. Gagatiga will also discuss concepts in planning, implementing and evaluating programs and services for children and teenagers. 21st century trends in school library management and administration will also be presented as well as information on professional learning networks, particularly the International Association of School Libraries.

Participants will be charged a workshop fee of P500.

Modern Heroes for the Filipino Youth Series Launching

Modern Heroes for the Filipino Youth Series, Bookmark’s series for children’s books, will be formally launched on February 5, 2014, Wednesday, 6:00-9:00 p.m., at the Last Chukker, Manila Polo Club, McKinley Road, Forbes Park, Makati City.
The series features nine new titles, namely: A Passion for Science (Dr. Lourdes Cruz and Dr. Baldomero Olivera, Jr.), A Time to Grow (Margarita Dela Cruz Santiago), A Voice of Hope in a Time of Darkness (Susan Fernandez-Magno), BROCKA: The Filmmaker without Fear (Lino Brocka), The First International Filipino Diva (Jovita Fuentes), The Pangat, the Mountains, and the River (Macliing Dulag), I Know Where My Heart Is (Bro. Richie Fernando SJ), My Father, the “Soldier” (Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos), and My Role Model (Vidal Lory Tan.)
The Modern Heroes for the Filipino Youth Series aims to present role models for young people to emulate. Each story in the series contains a central theme that exemplifies a moral value or characteristic or an exemplary incident in the life of each principal character.
Also to be launched are Pages written by Javier T. Delfin, illustrated by Gabi Dimaranan, The Day of Darkness written by Gutch Gutierrez and Zig Marasigan, illustrations by Gutch Gutierrez.
Original illustrations will be exhibited and be up for sale. The authors and artists will be present for the book signing.

Bookmark’s New Children’s Books Released

The Bookmark, Inc. is proud to present two new published books for Modern Heroes for the Filipino Youth SeriesBrocka: The Filmmaker Without Fear written and illustrated by Jose T. Gamboa and The First International Filipino Diva written by Lin Acacio–Flores and illustrated by Jomike Tejido.

Brocka: The Filmmaker Without Fear is a children’s book story on the life of multi-awarded film director Lino Brocka, presented how Brocka made movies that were truly Filipino, made movies that entertained, challenged, and made the audience think.
The First International Filipino Diva focused on Jovita Fuentes, the first female National Awardee in Music in the Philippines and was also the first Filipina to be acclaimed one of the best opera singers in the world in the early 1900s. Also released is Pages, written by Javier T. Delfin and illustrated by Gabi Dimaranan, a story of journal’s journey to discovery and the values of writing presented. The Day of Darkness story and illustrations by Gutch Gutierrez, co-written by Zig Marasigan and edited by Aurora Morealis is a story where in a faraway land, whenever the moon was full, a ferocious creature called “The Beast” emerged to terrorize villagers, until a curious boy sought to discover the truth about this monster.

Modern Tsinoy Plays: TIME WAITS and Other Plays Debi L. Tan



About the Playwright

Debbie Ann Tan has always experimented with different storytelling voices both in English and in Filipino. She has written different genres as well starting with essays and short story fiction, but for some years now, she has focused on playwriting. She is a Carlos Palanca Memorial Award winner for “Time Waits” and second place for “Teroristang Labandera.” She has published under NCCA’s Ubod Writers Series in 2005 for “Fate’s Line.”  “Dragon Blood” published in “Stage Presence: The Philippine PEN Anthology of Drama,”  UST Publishing in 2008. And “Teroristang Labandera” in “Virgin Labfest 2005-2008: Unang Antolohiya” published by Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2009.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, other plays by Debbie shown in the Virgin Labfest were “Dragon’s Breath,” “Mga Babaeng Too Bright,” and the recent “Balunbalunan, Bingi-bingihan.”   
Debbie graduated Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at De La Salle University in 2002. She is a fellow of the 6th Ateneo-NCCA National Writers Workshop. She has written several commissioned plays and is currently teaching at Miriam College. Debbie is freelance writer, editor, graphic and web designer and amateur 3D animator.
